Proud, Pleased and Petrified

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

At her Amigos Training Graduation last Sunday
I'm calling this post "Proud, Pleased and Petrified" because it sums up how I feel about Katie's rapidly approaching trip to The Dominican Republic fairly accurately. I believe I cycle through all three emotions several times a day.

It is unbelievable that we sold all that grapefruit and she wrote all those letters and now she is actually going. By the way, if you bought that grapefruit and/or sent donations to AMIGOS I can't say "THANK YOU" enough!

And if you are wondering what the heck I'm talking about here is a great video about her summer plans. She is volunteering for eight weeks in The DR, living with a host family, and working on humanitarian projects.
Surprisingly, this was all her own idea. In fact, Marc and I tried to talk her out of it. I would look her dead in the eye and say, "You heard what they said about bucket baths didn't you?" But in true Katie fashion, she was able to talk us into it. And I'm happy for her, really I am...I'm just going to miss her so much. Eight days and counting; Aye Carumba!

Slothful Summer

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

We saw these guys in Santa Barbara; they are my inspiration.

My slothful week continues fairly successfully. Exhibit Tuesday:

Woke up, put on sweats and went to track, got out of car, decided it was too cold to walk/run, returned home and went back to bed.

Got up to take Marc to Bart (like the Metro), returned home and went back to bed.

Somewhere in there Ellie got in bed with me so when I woke up the third time we were able to enjoy her hooked on phonics lesson in, you guessed it, bed.

Finally got up in time to drive into Berkeley and be taken out to lunch by the parents. Thanks guys!

Drove home to pick up the kids' swim suits and then scooted over to Dana's to watch the kids swim while we lounged and chatted. Okay, I lounged...Dana managed to throw Cabbo (her doggie) in the pool, find goggles, make cookies, and give a visiting teaching lesson while I sat there.

For dinner I am exerting all my strength and warming up pizza. Marc will be pleasantly surprised since last night I said I couldn't make dinner and had to be taken out. Progress!

In a minute I'll have to take Jonathan to Lacrosse but my plan is to wait in the car with my (embarrassingly juvenile) book, "Dragon Champion."

At various times today I have considered and rejected as too taxing: laundry, grocery shopping, making my bed, vacuuming, washing the dog, and organizing my desk. Perhaps tomorrow? Perhaps.

Summer Daze

Monday, May 25, 2009

School will be out in just two weeks; it is seriously time to make my plans. Last year I wrote about Points as a way of managing the crazies, but for some reason I'm just not feeling it this year.

I'm more focused on goals for this summer. Goal number one is getting Ellie caught up in reading. This one scares me to death, honestly I am a good mother in most ways but I am horrible at tutoring my kids. It always ends in sorrow; sometimes with me locked in the bathroom. I'm not exaggerating.

But read she must so I will sally forth to the Teacher's store near our house and try to buy some hand holding guidance type book program thingamagigger. Yep.

Goal number two is moving Jonathan along in Scouts. Okay, I'll just admit it, I stink at Scouts, too. But I'm hoping that by writing it down (here) I'll do better. I'm visualizing myself remembering to look at the darned Scout book and helping Jonathan get through it before school starts.

Speaking of school, I am SO over homework. Can't we just forget it for the last weeks of school?

And finally, a goal for the girls. I'll have to pray and ponder about that one and get back to you. Maybe I will make them my personal trainers and give them the job of making me loose 15 lbs. Can I do that?
